Mystics top the Seawolves 90-70
Jaxon Smith led the Mystics with 27 points Sunday afternoon in Halifax.
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics defeated the UNBSJ Seawolves 90-70 at the A. Garnet Memorial Gymnasium.
Jaxon Smith (Beechville, NS) led the Mystics today with a game-high 27 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Jaydan Smith (Beechville, NS) chipped in with 17 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists. Isaac Matheson (Bedford, NS) had a double-double performance to help the Mystics this afternoon, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Jack Fury-Miller (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) led the Seawolves with 21 points and 4 rebounds. Ben Power (Grand Bay-Westfield, NB) supported the offense as he finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds. AJ Nash (St. John's, NL) finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds to round out the Seawolves offense today.
The Mystics took the early lead highlighted by a layup by Matheson, followed by a three pointer by Jaydan Smith, that was assisted by Jaxon Smith. The Seawolves countered with a driving layup by Fury-Miller and a three pointer by Ernest Vovk (Chipman, NB). The Mystics responded with a buzzer beating shot by Jaxon Smith to give the Mystics a 23-16 lead after the first quarter.
The Seawolves came out of the quarter break ready to make a run to get back into the game, led by Jack Fury-Miller who had 11 points in the quarter. His performance in the quarter was highlighted by a steal that led to driving jumper through traffic against the Mystics to lessen the Mystics lead. Jaydan Smith hit a three pointer to race the buzzer at end of the second quarter, which gave the Mystics a narrow 44-42 lead.
The Mystics came out ready to start the quarter as Matheson picked up the defensive intensity with a blocked shot, a few possessions later, Jaxon Smith made a jumper to extend their lead. Jaxon Smith had his fingerprint all over this quarter with three consecutive highlight plays. First, he had a driving layup, followed by an attack which drew the foul, and a spinning hook shot. He finished the quarter with 11 points. The Mystics extended their lead to 67-49 at the end of the third quarter.
The Seawolves looked to make a comeback early in the fourth quarter as Vovk hit a momentum-swinging three. The Seawolves were able to close the gap to 13 points due to a flurry of made baskets midway through the quarter which led to a Mystics timeout. The Mystics came out of the timeout and had a quick 6-0 run, highlighted by a three-point shot by Adam Callaghan (Sydney, NS), assisted by Matheson. The Mystics ended up winning the matchup by a score of 90-70.
The Mystics moved to 5-0 and the Seawolves fell to 3-2. The Mystics will host the Holland Hurricanes next Saturday at 6:00pm in Halifax. The Seawolves will travel to the University of King's College where they will take on the Blue Devils at 4:00pm.
