Saint John, NB — The UNB Saint John Seawolves put up a strong fight against 2nd-ranked in the nation Mount Saint Vincent Mystics on Saturday afternoon but couldn't keep pace in the second half, falling 90-73 at the G. Forbes Elliot Gymnasium.
The game started off with plenty of energy, as the Seawolves took a 27-24 lead after the first quarter. The home crowd had plenty to cheer for, with Jack Fury-Miller and Ethan Szemerda dominating the glass early on. The Seawolves held their own against an MSVU team that has yet to lose this season, but the Mystics showed why they're at the top, taking control in the second half and outscoring UNBSJ 43-28 down the stretch.
Fury-Miller led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds, playing with relentless energy on both ends of the court. Szemerda also recorded a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Ben Power contributed 10 points and eight boards. Aiden Conners provided a spark off the bench, going 4-for-5 from the field for 8 points.
MSVU was paced by Adam Callaghan's 25 points, while Isaac Matheson added 16 and Isaiah Cromwell-Wright chipped in 14 off the bench. The Mystics capitalized on UNBSJ turnovers, scoring 16 points off giveaways, and used a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter to pull away.
Despite the loss, the Seawolves showed they can compete with the best in the league. With only a few games left in the regular season, they'll be looking to finish strong and carry momentum into the playoffs.
The team is back in action tommorow, hoping to bounce back in front of their home crowd.
