Mystics defeat Rams 4-0
The Mystics men's soccer team clinched fourth place in the ACAA standings with a 4-0 win over the visiting Dalhousie Rams Sunday afternoon in Halifax.
Mystics forward Aidan Whelan had the first scoring opportunity of the game, but Rams keeper Cam Schurman was able to make the save.
Schurman came up big for the Rams just a few minutes later, thwarting an effort by Noah Jordan.
Ignacio Chung Michelsen put the ball past Schurman in the ninth minute off a beautiful pass through the middle from Nick Bryden to give the Mystics an early 1-0 lead.
The Mystics increased their lead in the 21st minute when Cooper McVicar-Smith played a ball through to Alex Bellefontaine who in turn passed off to Jacob Heroux who banged the ball into the back of the net off the left post to go up 2-0.
Heroux and Whelan combined for some tic-tac-toe passing with the latter sending the ball over Schurman's head and into the net to give the Mystics a 3-0 lead in the 34th minute.
The Rams had a chance when a foul was called on the Mystics 10 feet outside the Mystics 18 yard box, but they were unable to convert, so the Mystics held a 3-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.
Calum MacLeod had a good look for the Rams early in the second but his shot went wide. Eric Winters also had an opportunity after a Mystics foul, but the ball was handled easily by MSVU keeper Tristan Brocklehurst.
The Mystics continued to press, but were unable to convert on any movement until Bellefontaine worked the ball in close and passed off to Chung Michelsen who scored his second of the game with just eight minutes left in regulation.
That would do it for scoring, giving the Mystics a 4-0 win to secure the fourth and final spot at the ACAA championship next weekend.
