Mystics soar past the Chargers in home opener
Celine Sterckel and Victoria Strickland scored 22 and 18 points respectively in the win Saturday afternoon in Halifax.
The 2024-2025 ACAA Women's Basketball season is underway as the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics hosted the Crandall Chargers at the A. Garnet Brown Memorial Gymnasium.
The Mystics defeated the visiting Chargers 85-48, lead by Victoria Strickland. The St. John's native led the charge with 18 points, 4 steals and 4 3pts made. Supporting the Mystics all-around performance were Marley Curwin and Celine Sterckel in their debut. Curwin finished with 13 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Sterckel came off the bench to finish with a team high 22 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds.
The Chargers were led by Ellie Hiltz who finished the game with a double-double, scoring 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Tarvinder Kaur also finished the game with a double-double off the bench for the Chargers. She tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kelsey Alward chipped in with 8 points and 7 rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth quarter to kick start the season as both teams traded baskets. The Crandall Chargers took a narrow 23-21 lead after the first quarter.
The Mystics started the second quarter strong with a 16-7 run, thanks to their quick hands and timely three pointers. The Mystics proceeded to outscore the Chargers 25-8 leading to a half-time lead of 46-31.
The Mystics came out of the half-time break on a 11-2, highlighted by an exhilarating spin move to a left-handed lay-up by Victoria Strickland.
The Chargers continue to try to close the gap against the Mystics but their tenacious defence which caused 37 turnovers, and the Mystics volume shooting from deep was too much for the Chargers to overcome finishing with 14 3pts made.
The Mystics return to the court tomorrow as they host the Mount Allison Mounties. The Chargers return to the court on Saturday, November 2nd as they host the St. Thomas Tommies.
