Mystics fall short in close matchup with Mounties
The Mount Allison Mounties travelled to play the Mount Saint Vincent Mystics today.
It was a nail-biting performance by both teams this afternoon as the Mounties won their season opener on the road by a score of 66-60. In the final minutes of the game, Emma Roberts hit a 3 point shot as the
shot clock expired to put the game out of reach.
The Mounties offense was led by Amelia Mitchell who finished the game with a team high 14 points, while adding 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Support came from Kaitlyn Simard who tallied
10 points and 3 rebounds. Filling up the stat sheet for the Mounties was Jillan Mumford with 6 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists.
The Mystics were led by Celine Sterckel, with a game high 20 points. Sterckel contributed with 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Marley Curwin finished with a stat line of 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
Zai Smith and Jenna Matheson both finished with 7 points.
The Mounties controlled the glass to start the game outrebounding the Mystics 10-8. The Mystics continued to claw back into the game with strong attacks to the basket, leading
to going 4/4 from the free throw line. The Mounties held a narrow 17-15 lead after the first quarter.
The sharpshooting from the Mounties to start the quarter stretched the lead leading to Mystics to call a quick timeout. The Mystics battled back into the game with key contribution from their bench.
The game was tied 32-32 at halftime.
A strong all-around quarter from Marley Curwin paced the Mystics offense, highlighted with a pinpoint transition pass to Emma Empringham, who finished the play with an uncontested layup
in stride. The Mounties hustled their way to a 46-40 lead going into the fourth quarter, capped off by an offensive rebound and putback layup by Addison Albert as time expired in the quarter.
The Mounties added to their lead to start the quarter but the Mystics crawled back into the game cutting the lead to 53-50 with 6:16 remaining thanks to their defensive pressure
and three-point shooting.
The Mystics return to the court next week as they travel to Prince Edward Island to play the Holland College Hurricanes on Friday, November 1st. The Mounties travel to Saint John to battle the
UNBSJ Seawolves next Saturday, November 2nd.
