Mystics top Tommies 63-49
Coach Mark Forward secured his 300th career victory as Mystics head coach Saturday afternoon in Halifax
(Halifax, NS) The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 63-49 at the A. Garnet Memorial Gymnasium. The Mystics victory was a historic victory for their head coach, Mark Forward, as he won his 300th career game as the Mount Mystics' women's head coach.
Victoria Strickland (St. John's, NL) led the Mystics attack with 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 rebounds. Marley Curwin (Halifax, NS) chipped in with 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.
Katie Vidito (Charlottetown, PE) finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks for the Tommies. Charlee Connors (Fredericton, NB) tallied 9 points, 7 rebounds for the Tommies' offence.
Victoria Strickland started the game with a three-point shot. On the following possession, Katie Vidito matched her with her own three-point shot. For the rest of the quarter, it was a defensive battle leading 17-13 lead for the Mystics.
The Tommies came out to start the quarter aggressively, forcing the Mystics into consecutive turnovers. The Tommies continued to add pressure throughout the quarter, highlighted by a steal and charge drawn by Kylee Roi (Fredericton, NB). The Tommies took a halftime narrow lead by a score of 34-32.
The Mystics came out to start the second half with an intense defensive pressure with a Marley Curwin steal which led to her crucial three-point shot. The pressure ensued throughout the quarter, where the Mystics pressure continued. The Mystics outscored the Tommies 16 – 2 in the quarter, highlighted by a steal by Jenna Matheson (Halifax, NS) which led to a three-point shot made by Victoria Strickland, forcing St. Thomas to call a timeout. The Mystics held a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Tommies fought back in the game with key turnovers. Charlee Connors had two layups in the quarter to cut the lead but the Mystics pressure was too much for the Tommies. The Mystics ended up claiming a victory by a final score of 63-49.
The Mystics return to the court tomorrow at 1:00pm as they face the UNBSJ Seawolves. The Tommies travel to the University of King's College to battle the Blue Devils at 2:00pm.
