Mystics defeat Tommies 3-2
The Mystics defeated the St. Thomas Tommies with three different scorers Saturday afternoon in Bedford, N.S.
Emma Farrell had the first scoring opportunity of the match within the first five minutes of the game for the Mystics, but Tommies keeper Lauren Erb made her first of many saves in the game.
STU's Lindsey Smith countered a short time later with a hard, low shot, but Morgan Gillis made the save for MSVU.
Both teams traded opportunities in their opponents zone, moving the ball skillfully, but not really producing many scoring opportunities until MSVU's Lauren Seamone took a free kick from the right wing, but the Mystics were unable to find the back of the net. Ana Lucas had a good look soon after, but a STU defender put their foot on the ball as she shot and Erb was able to make the save.
St. Thomas' Caitlyn Steeves had a near breakaway, but Gillis charged out from her net to boot the ball away.
A STU player was hauled down in front of the Mystics net with just four minutes left resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for STU. Steeves took the shot and scored, putting the Tommies up 1-0.
The Tommies continued to press, taking advantage of the momentum of the goal. Delaney Hancock had a good look with a long shot, but Gillis made yet another save to prevent STU from increasing their lead.
Seamone and Kayley Clair both responded with great chances for the Mystics, but they could not find the back of the net. Emma Farrell had the best opportunity of the first half for the Mystics, sending a long shot high towards the net. Erb leaped into the air and tipped the ball over the net. St. Thomas led 1-0 at the half.
The Mystics came out strong to start the second half with Emma Bowser putting the ball just out of reach of Erb within the first three minutes to tie the game 1-1.
Bowser had another couple of opportunities soon after, but Erb was able to make the save both times.
Smith put the Tommies up 2-1 with a cross field shot to the far corner of the net in the 62nd minute.
The Mount responded five minutes later when Beth Padfield found the back of net on a cross from Mhyah Allen to tie the game at two apiece.
Padfield put a ball through to a racing Seamone who launched a shot towards the Tommies net hoping to break the tie, but her ball sailed just over the cross bar. Undeterred, Seamone took another shot a few feet past half and sent it high over the keepers head in the 81st minute to take a 3-2 lead with just nine minutes left in the game.
That would do it for scoring, giving the Mystics a 3-2 come-from-behind win.
With the win, the Mystics improve to 4-0-3, while STU falls to 2-3-2.
Both teams are back in action Sunday with the Mystics playing host to the UNBSJ Seawolves, while the Tommies face the University of King's College.
