Emma Derechey's penalty-kick winner secured a 1-0 victory for the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder over the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics Wednesday afternoon as the sides played scoreless through regulation time.
It was a chess match from the get-go as CUE and MSVU both proved stout defensively, each unraveling the other side's forays into scoring areas. The Mystics may have had the best chance to score in regulation time in the first half on a corner kick which appeared to line up for a header finish but the redirection went wide.
The game ended scoreless as dusk gave way to darkness and the light standards took over. Under that setting, the teams chose five player each to take kicks and MSVU went first but Kate Burton's effort sailed over the bar. Each CUE player converted on their PK attempt, ending on Derechey's blast to the upper part of the net.
The Mystics take on the host Capilano Blues Thursday, November 7 at 1:30pm local (4:30pm Halifax) with an eye on advancing to the bronze medal final.
