A pair of teams in search a goal and a win got things started Friday morning in Squamish and it was the MSVU Mystics with a late goal to claim a 1-0 win over the Brandon Bobcats.
It was a see-saw match with teams trading bouts of possession but not really testing either keeper. Coming out of halftime, MSVU turned up the pressure, commanding possession and pushing into Bobcats territory for extended stays, eventually resulting in a good opportunity for Leah Mombourquette but she fired wide. Not long after, Emma Bowser appeared to get the Mystics on the board but the assistant referees flag went up, nullifying the goal on an offside ruling.
Brandon's Brogan Henry had probably her team's best chance to score midway through the second half but her blast on goal was handled by MSVU keeper Morgan Gillis. As the game moved into minute 80, Mystics second-year striker Mhyah Allen finally put it all together, notching the winner with a low drive past a diving Josie Black in the Bobcats goal. MSVU ends up as the seventh-place finisher in the 2024 CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship.
